Air pollution in Beijing? Is this really a big SURPRISE to anyone? Didn't they take this into consideration when they BOOKED the venue? Man oh man - some days I am just SURE that EVERYONE is a dumba*s.

I wonder if they'll have any rowing events in the Yangtze River. I can picture it now- "Olympic officals and viewers alike could only gape in horror as rowers progressively lost their hair during the course of the race."

The IOC was basically bribed/bullied into letting Beijing hosting the games. Bribed to make the members happy but if Beijing did not get the bid, the home countries of the IOC members would find their companies would have some difficulties in China.

Basically, this dirty, mass murdering wreckage of empire would have never been considered if it wasn't for MNC greed.

Did China make the equipment? I don't want Olympians to wind up with a case of lead poisoning.

Why does not the fact that these in outdoor sports will be placed at Health Risks.

CHINA may produce but in many respects remains a Third nation in as much as health.

To those that visit China, just leave the tourist traps, and see where every day folk live.

I wonder if they will say "People are being too overly concerned" after the tests come back and the athletes are using steroids and other enhancements.

Only if it is them. They will not have to look too far.

Just order a hot dog at their stadium and you will be positive for every drug, chemical and pollutant ever created. You may even light up due to radiation posioning.

I dont know what "postponing" outdoor events will do..."gee maybe it wont be so polluted on wednesday" makes no sense, and as someone else said why didnt they think of this before. Yes LA is bad, but LA isnt nowhere near as populated and thus forth polluted as Beijing. Which china is so going to kick our ass in gymnastics and diving in the olympics...thats about it but still...

                            evelyna,

Where's that hot dog? Have you ever got one? Or have you eaten one and it is now radiating in your belly? Hot dog is not Chinese food. Ask McDonald's and Coca Cola not to sell things there if you don't like radiating hot dog there. You won't succeed. Better still, go there and find out the truth and learn. Do you choose not to go, not to find out and think with your brain but just utter anything that comes to you just to show your ignorance.

Pollution Dangers Cast Shadow over 2008 Olympics

With the prospect of athletes running marathons and cycling in Beijing's smog and pollution-laden air, experts in sports medicine are concerned about the health risks associated with the Olympic Games in China.

China has promised what it calls "Green Games," but its pollution figures suggest the more grayish hue of smog and pollution

Beijing - When there is no rain or wind, ozone and fine dust accumulate, often to a rate that is two or three times the maximum levels recommended by the World Health Organization

                              http://www.netscape.com/viewstory/2007/06/28/po...

Swimming events - they said they would have to import water to fill the pools or build desalinization facilities because no water in China could pass the IOC water safety standards

A whole scientific food tracing system has been set up to prevent problematic from entering the venues. Athletes will know the origin of the food that they eat. The job started in 2003! Western experts that worked for former Olympics have been included. What about air pollution? That's a price China pays for doing all the manufacturing while user countries have clearner air. Will athletes and the audience be poisoned by the air in Beijing? haha. There are so many people there enjoying longevity of life. Dengxiaoping breathed the same air, maybe his illness was caused by that; otherwise he should be living till now. hahaha. As for water safety, Chinese figures say the water has passed tests. Is there not a committee including members from other countries to preside over the job and determine whether these are reliable?
