Big ups to Anaheim. It's great to see Selanne with the cup. This was well deserved.
It's also always nice to see Ottawa get trampled ;-)

Really you think the game is dying? I don't when after a lock-out. The Good teams still had a huge fan base. And even those good teams pulled the chitty ones out of the hole.
If anything is dying it is the NBA and the NFL, the NFL lost a lot of viewers for the Super Bowl. Hockey took out the 2 line pass and made it harder for golies to handle the puck around the net. All cause of two men. Broduer and Turco. Yet they prove you could not stop them...
And if you think that the shootout is not on its way during the playoffs. Lost revenue with overtime will bring it in. Yeah a bit drastic to us diehard fans. But will make the game more exciting. The NHL will only get better cause of the players and what the league will do

The game isn't dying, it just needs to market itself a heck of a lot better. It's a great sport that's a lot of fun to watch, but they need to restructure their schedule (and shorten it) so that a sport played on ice doesn't have it's "Super Bowl" in June.
I like their commissioner Gary Bettman, and he has done a lot of good things, but his major weakness is that he has done a pretty poor job with marketing/promoting the league. That needs to change, but "dying"? Give me a break...

Ah this is going to suck. Now we will have to deal with them bandwagon Duck fans on all the message boards around the league.
Ok I am happy for Selanne, yet as for the rest of them Ducks. Well, actually it is just that name. The Ducks. Even though they took off the mighty . You know that them fair weather fans will be saying that they were the Mighty Ducks on all the sites. Just can not stand that cartoon duck. That is a bad as them puke yellow sweaters that Nashville wears.

Ok I have been waiting for the Cup Finals to be over with.
Now let's talk about the draft. I see some hope from the Current Crop that will be coming from N. America. Don't get me wrong I would like to see some more Europeans in the league. But I do not want them coming in and taking the place of the fine players that we have here in N. America.
There were some really fine young Canidians that were passed up last year in the Draft. And that sucked. Yeah you have some fast skaters and some good defense that comes from Europe. But I want to see the scoring that comes from the Canadians and U.S. players. But I think my Stars need at least 3 more Jere Lehtinin.

I'll tel you though, the NHL is hurting in terms of fans... I heard the first game got a 1.1 rating... that's PBS ratings territory.

Actually if you count the games being Tivo'd then you would not get that rating. Tivo is a good thing for all the people who work nights. Or have an early day and have to go to bed early. But how many NBA teams or NFL teams that can say they had 25 games in a row sold out. Not many I will tell you that. And there are a couple of hockey teams that can claim that they have been selling out for 2 years and that is no small feat.

If you want your show or favorite team to have good ratings watch it live. But not all of us can do that all the time. That is why we have Tivo.

I don't know Neo, we had watching parties here in Dallas for the Cup. Yeah we do not have your hatred of Ottawa. We do hate them Ducks though. So I know where you are coming from in that perspective. But hell it was hockey and we still watched. Just cringed everytime a Duck scored.

I'm not so sure the Sens are the most hated team in Canada, that said I do hate them because I'm a leafs fan, so living in Toronto you probably hear that a lot Neo. If you move east in my part of the country there is a huge Sens following. I think the most hated team is Montreal.

Some Markets Just aren't made for hockey (like Nashville) for the last 15 years NHL has pretty much conducted a study by expanding to non-trad markets.
Some work (san jose) others dont (miami)
But the commish really dropped the ball in regards to TV deals, losing ESPN was the biggest mistake.
Hockey is still the most watched game up here in Canada. It would be wise for them to put the next team in Canada..like the Peg

Hamilton or even better still...Mississauga. Put some pressure on the Leafs to produce a winner on the ice instead of the boardroom. It is sad to see a GM on a team that has missed the playoffs for the last two seasons get a contract extension instead of an assisted leap from the CN tower (figuratively speaking of course)

Damn ok have to get to bed. Hey Neo if you want to discuss this further. Message me. Not too many here would want to do that. But I am ok with it. It is hockey after all.

Hockey may be less popular in the US of A than what assuredly is the most boring game in the world, baseball, but there are other parts of the world where the sport is actually revered. American acceptance is not a reflection on the merits of the game. Sports like soccer have been doing rather well without any breakthrough in the North American market. It is a matter of perspective.
By the way... The best team won.

There are an awful lot of great american hockey players that have played in the NHL and will continue to do so. There is a great development system throughout the U.S. colleges and minor hockey league systems. It is true that it is much more important in Canada...It IS the national sport. You may be surprised to know that it is also played in Russia, Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Switzerland,Chech Republic, Japan,Norway etc.

Congrats to the Ducks! It's quite amazing to think that there was only one guy on the team, including the coaching staff, that had won the cup before... Spread it around, I say! It's every young hockey players dream to lift the Stanley Cup.

aqua - thanks for the tutorial on hockey - my whole point is that professional hockey as played in the NHL with the exception of a few great players is a dull game. In short - a player goes out on ice commits foul goes to foul box & this repeats itself through game.
Amature hockey is a wholey different game in the US real passion & sport. Professional hockey is dying & the non-season helped it on it's way.

That is your opinion and you are most entitled to it - ace. As far as your inference to a lack of passion in the NHL...I totally disagree. An awful lot of these players competing in the Stanley Cup Playoff were playing for pride and the love of the game and many were playing through injuries. A good example is Pronger, who played a good portion of last nights game with a separated shoulder. If that is not passion, I do not know what is.
As far as dull goes ....batter goes to the plate...spits...scratchs balls... swings..sits down...sequence repeats two more times...Wow, I can hardly contain my excitement. Oh wait! Bonds is out of the game...he has a splinter in his butt and will be out indefinitely.

I haven't watched a game for years but must admit your right about the passion the players put in to the play offs. When Gary B. took control of the league it ruined it for me, names of the conferences and devisions changed and I found it very disrespectful for the people and history who made the sport great. The good will on these post are nice to see and its good to see the sport has strong fan support across north America. I still think the old days of the seventies and eighties were the best with Montreal against Quebec in the play offs when the two Hunter brothers squared off and went fist to fist, if I remember right Montreal won then met Edmonton where the third Hunter brother was playing but I cant remember any fighting there.

Lets talk about the players who play through pain through the regular season, muchless the playoffs. You constently hear about the basketball player who can't play, "He hurt his finger." Or the football player who has turftoe. You would get laughed out of the locker room if you were to say that to a hockey player.
That crap about you went to a WWE match and a hockey game broke out. Man like I never heard that one before. How about this, The NFL announced their newest team. Called the Felons, all ex-players around the league who were arrested for drugs and spouse abuse. The Coach is Michael Irvin.

Thanks for adding this story to the news list neo.
This is one thing I can agree on with all the other netscape responders. My favorite team is still playing for the AHL championship...although, that cup could be decided tonight in Hamilton, ON...and not in my teams favor.
Have a great day...and yes, the best team won.

I guess this is what Bettman wanted with the Salary Cap. He's really growing the game. From the ratings no one was watching. I'm a huge hockey fan and I had no interest in this final. Or the one last year. Bettman and the owners screwed themselves in the 90's by putting teams in Florida, Georgia, Tenessee, Arizona, California. They were losing money before the lockout and they are still losing money. Bettman must go.

In regards to the Preds. I live in Murfreesboro, TN about 20 miles outside of Nashville. I listen to sports talk radio and have been sort of shocked at all the calls in favor of hockey and demanding the Preds stay put. As a native born southern boy I tend to lean towards football, but a lot of my northern friends attend and enjoy hockey.

Ok you can keep them Preds. As long as you get your fellow neighbors to stop with that damn whistle. TooToo is a god awful player. And he thinks he has skill. Oh and another thing, get rid of that damn puke color sweater. It can be done.
We did it here in Dallas when we did not like the 3rd sweater. You know the one with that bull on the front. The one that looked like a uterus. We called it the Moo-terus. We all knew that they had one too many at the holiday party when they thought up that one.
